We’ve got the low down on expert hairstylist Jonathan Fisher – One half of the brains behind Palmer Fisher London. Known for his exquisite cutting skills, Jonathan (and wife, Nikita) are certainly ones to watch in 2022.
Its creative, hands on, it involves music, fashion and connecting with people
Can you share a timeline of your career?
I trained and assisted with Paul Falltricks and qualified in just six months. I went on to work at Toni & guy for 5 years where I worked my way up to a management position. From there, I went to a men’s salon – Jacks of London – where I was a manager and then went on to manage a Headmasters salon. From there I opened up and managed new salons at RUSH, which led to managing an Aveda salon for 5 years. I then became regional manager for a salon group called Salon Central. This led to a general manager position for Sean Hanna salons and from there I was Operations Director at Jamie Stevens salons, until last year when we opened Palmer Fisher London.
If you weren’t a hairdresser, what do you think you’d be doing?
Probably something in sport, or even in the music industry
What do you love about cutting hair?
It’s so creative! You can completely change someones look instantly. Perfectionism in getting it perfect is super satisfying
What excites you the most – working on long or short hair?
They both do, but if I had to pick it would be short hair. I love texture and creating the right shape
Most exciting part of your career so far?
Planning our own photoshoot and creating our collections
Most challenging part of your career so far?
I’ve worked in some pretty difficult company dynamics…
I know you’re big on looking after your team’s mental health & wellbeing. How do you do this?
I think working with team members as individuals is best. Really taking the time to understand them and what makes them happy; and what motivates them. Regular 1-to-1’s are a must! They give you the opportunity to work on any issues and reward great work. Being compassionate and always being approachable is key.
How do you keep the team engaged and motivated?
We find out what makes them tick. Is it time, money, gifts, products or training? We’ll then incentifie our staff with these. It’s important they feel they are moving forward and achieving their goals
What is it about Clapham that made you choose this location for the salon?
It’s London but it’s not central – where the rents are increase tremendously. Clapham Junction station is so early accessible, making it easy for clients to travel from all over to get to us. It also has a great demographic of all types of people
Any plans for a second salon?
Possibly… We want to get this one completely settled and secure before we start expanding. Although, with how fast we are growing, we might have to look at getting a bigger salon!
What’s next for Jonathan?
Shoots, winning competitions, mens cutting educator. Get Palmer Fisher London out there and have a happy and successful team.
