How to get that wet-look hair

The wet-look was a staple across all the SS24 runways, but this hairstyle requires a lot more than a quick shower. The super-shiny, slicked look has been making waves on the red carpet, worn by celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Alix Earle and almost all the Kardashian/Jenners. But what’s the key to this edgy, timeless look? We caught up with Katrina Kelly, Senior Creative Colour JOICO EMEA team member to find out.

Get the look

“To achieve lacquered lengths, the right products are required to give the hair that shiny, textured look,” explains Katrina. “It’s best to start with damp hair, that’s been blow-dried about 75 per cent. Then to achieve the I’ve-just-come-from-the-beach’ look, the key ingredient is gel – and lots of it! Spread the gel evenly from the root to your ends, and don’t be afraid to use too much gel – there’s no such thing as too much gel when it comes to the wet-hair look.

“I recommend JOICO JOIgel Firm Styling Gel, which provides excellent support and shine for your hair without flaking. Next, I recommend the JOICO Beach Shake Texturising Finisher for tousled waves to create beachy, windswept waves. This is a fantastic fast-setting spray that is perfect for holding the wet-look in place. To finish, add a shine serum to make the hair glisten, replicating the reflection of the water. I recommend the JOICO K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Glossing Oil, a shine enhancing oil designed to nourish and protect the hair.”

Think ahead

When trying to achieve the wet-look, Katrina advises to be mindful of the client’s hair-type. For example, if the client has fine or thin hair, the hair usually tends to look sparse when wet. She says: “If looking to try out the wet look, be sure to use a lightweight gel so that the hair is not weighed down at the root, causing the hair to look even thinner. Even if the client has thinner hair, you can still make this look work.

“The wet-look is incredibly flattering, and I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this mermaid-esque style as we move into the summer months – it would be perfect for a night out.”

Edgy, timeless and sultry, what’s not to love?
