Candice McKay: A Master Crafts(wo)man

Following on from a weekend of celebrating incredible women we are we’re about to dive into the fabulous world of Candice McKay, an international hairdressing icon. Candice has hustled hard to gain recognition for her creativity and expertise – respect to that.

Background

Born in South Africa and now based in Europe, a career in hairdressing was inevitable for Candice, with a Mother who was an industry trailblazer paving the way for her success. Candice’s mother encouraged her to enter competitions when she was an apprentice, not only to boost her confidence but to maximise her creativity – this has sure paid off.

A career in hairdressing is forever evolving, but that’s what keeps it interesting. Candice hasn’t just worked in the most luxurious salons, she’s also spent time in grunge and punk establishments allowing her to grow her skills and her understanding of client service.

Achievements

Not only does Candice boast a multitude of awards, she has also had some hair-raising moments to be proud of. When Candice went into the world of session styling she found herself behind then chairs of Elton John and Alek Lek working on magazines and film, this led to becoming the Head of Department for South Africa Fashion Week working alongside designers to bring their vision to life – now that’s one helluva achievement.

Candice has also produced some seriously eye-catching collections throughout her career. Here’s Lotus which she showcased at the Tribu-te Show Paris in 2021.

Today

Candice is now freelancing around Europe serving as an international educator, platform artist and creative director. She will craft a bespoke workshop to help your salon grow, feel inspired and build confidence. She also supports those looking to elevate their competitions and collection with art direction and mentoring.Collaborating with brands is another of Candice’s passion a she enjoys co-creating initiatives such as Davines Talent Green House.
