Mirror Talkers

Did you know? 25% of domestic energy use is attributed to hot water

Mirror Talkers - Green Salon Collective

Want to promote more sustainable hair care to your clients? Want to upsell products like dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner and reduce our environmental impacts at home and in salon? Try Mirror Talkers! The brainchild of Green Salon Collective and Denise Baden, Professor of Sustainable Business at University of Southampton, the concept is simple. Together GSC and Denise looked at the effectiveness of displaying small messages on salon mirrors (hence, mirror talkers), to engage clients in conversations around sustainable hair care.

Mirror Talkers

It’s this easy. Prompt conversation with your clients by posting a Mirror Talker sticker at the salon styling stations. A QR code directs clients to find out more, and obviously its a chance to educate yourself and your team, too. Displaying Mirror Talkers is a great way of showing your commitment to cutting wasteful practices. An added bonus is that the client learns more about your hairdressing services, too

Working with salons, the GSC found that Mirror Talkers are proving popular. Now, it’s your opportunity to benefit. And it’s free to join in.

The stickers are available in classic black and white or a pretty pink, you can learn more about each tip, and access a library of staff training videos to confidently tackle conversations around sustainable hair care by clicking here.

Did you know?

90% of the carbon footprint of a bottle of shampoo is the hot water used when washing hair. It’s compelling to read simple statements which provoke us all to consider what we do.

“Hairdressers talk to more people than any other profession and so are in a great position to talk to their clients about sustainable haircare. Running hot water is one of the most energy intensive activities we do in our homes, so simple tips such as shampooing less often or just once rather than rinse and repeat can save lots of water and energy and also improve hair condition for those who routinely over-wash.” – Professor Denise Baden, at Southampton University.

Why use Mirror Talkers in your salon?

30 salons were involved in the year-long study by GSC and Southampton Universitywith each provided a selection of thought-provoking ‘Eco Tips’ aimed at getting clients talking about their haircare and sustainability, and how you can make your routine more eco-friendly.. These ranged from ‘Running hot water is the most expensive and energy-intensive activity we do in our homes’ to ‘Do you always need to use conditioner?’

Preliminary results from the study  indicate that such conversations prompted by the mirror talkers led to positive impacts on clients’ behavioural intentions relating to sustainable hair care.

Research results

The study found that the employment of mirror talkers can support more sustainable use of water and energy in salons and can also boost sales of water and energy-saving products, such as leave-in conditioner and dry shampoo. Each Eco Tip had a linked QR code, leading to the training required to navigate those conversations, as well as a separate survey for both client and hairdresser to gauge their feedback on the process, and how effective the Mirror Talkers had been.

Additional benefits from the associated training materials are in empowering hairdressers with the knowledge to positively influence their clients’ practices. It was also suggested that mirror talkers can boost the reputation of the hair and beauty industry as well as the professional identity of hairdressers.
