Let the ‘mo grow this Movember

November equals Movember. As the month kicks off, so does the challenge to grow a moustache, in support of men’s health. As a professional, you can lend help for clients in choosing the right moustache to suit their vibe. To help, we have Ben Vowles, master barber at Murdock London.

Movember time

Ben says: “Choosing a moustache should be a joy, not a labour. Don’t let the prospect of alien upper lip hair unsettle clients. If they will sport a moustache for a month for a great cause, they should approach it with confidence and flair.”

Mecca

If your clients are new to growing facial whiskers, here are Ben’s three tips for Movember:

Start afresh

There’s nothing like starting afresh. Tell clients doing Movember to start with a clean shave. For the full moustachioed effect, they should keep shaving the rest of their face throughout the month.

Don’t be embarrassed

Help clients understand that it’s all for a good cause. It shouldn’t be a burden, but rather a fun challenge. Tell them to be patient and let the mo’ grow.

Pick a suitable style

Don’t let clients stress too early over heavier, unachievable styles. If the moustache isn’t too thick, they can grow their hair longer and part it to create a thicker-looking layer. Alternatively, they should keep it trim and maintained over the top lip. This gives more structure and a stronger shape. Creating a clean edge above and below the hair will make it seem thicker. If clients want to style with a curl and twizzle, they should undercut the hair. For longer, more intricate styles, they will need to keep it under control with a moustache comb. Once it’s long enough, they can curl up the ends. Ben suggests using his favourite, the Murdock London Vintage Pomade.
