How green is your salon?

plastic free month - green salons

Following on from last week’s blog post – Do clients recycle? We’re look at how green the hairdressing industry is, and how to become more environmentally conscious. As we approach the end of plastic-free month, we’re looking at how plastic waste and its negative impact on our environment is becoming increasingly concerning. Hair and beauty brands play a crucial role in promoting sustainability and helping to reduce plastic waste, which is why we want to share these tips with you.

Recycling programmes

Consider establishing recycling programs. We love what hair extension brand, Milk + Blush are doing to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by ensuring that hair is recycled and used in an environmentally friendly way – see more HERE

Education and awareness

Many consumers are unaware of the detrimental effects of plastic waste on the environment. We have a responsibility to educate our team (and clients) to raise awareness about the significance of proper recycling and sustainable practices. Why not work on a social media campaigns that highlights your salon’s sustainability efforts?

Small changes, big impact

Even small changes can make a huge difference. Align with brands who are reducing the amount of plastic used in packaging, exploring alternative materials, and implementing recycling programs. These steps can lead to a significant reduction in plastic waste and the protection of our oceans.

We’re proud to see that many of our favourite brands have been making these positive changes over the last few years.

Going above and beyond

While meeting eco-objectives is important, it’s crucial to go the extra mile in your sustainability efforts. Studies show that our clients are increasingly inclined to support businesses prioritising sustainability.

To reduce the carbon footprint of your workplace, consider using renewable energy sources and adopt paperless practices. You can also enhance sustainability by ensuring that your suppliers share the same values, focusing on reducing waste and committing to lower their carbon footprint

Transparency is key

Being open and honest with clients about your eco-efforts is essential. Encourage regular feedback on ways to improve. In addition to environmental practices, transparency is becoming a highly valued trait among consumers, setting you apart from the competition. For example, Milk + Blush have openly shared their stance on ethical sourcing and environmental impact on their website – see HERE – meaning those looking to purchase are clear on how eco-friendly the brand are.

It’s truly essential for the hair industry to prioritise sustainability efforts in order to address the issue of plastic waste and become more environmentally conscious. By implementing recycling programs, raising awareness, and adopting small changes that have a big impact, we can actively work towards creating a cleaner and greener future.
