Philipp Haug talks moving for the craft

Henkel Schwarzkopf Professional moving London work

Schwarzkopf Professional education ambassador, Philipp Haug, recently made an appearance on television in his native Germany. It was a great accolade to his achievements, and Phillip shared his career story and how he made a successful relocation to London. Read on for some insightful advice from Phillipp on moving for work.

“I understood from a very young age that London is the capital of hairdressing,” says Philipp. “Especially where I’m now based in the West End, where so many amazing and famous hairdressers developed their careers. Everything happens here. I never planned to come forever though – I thought I’d be here for a year! But 15 years later, things have turned out completely differently.”

Making the move

Having relocated to London early in his career with his former employer Toni&Guy, Philipp has firmly established the capital as both his personal and professional base. He was even named London Hairdresser of the Year at The British Hairdressing Awards in 2018. “I did lots of interviews when I won,” says Philipp. “But when the Pandemic started soon after, it was difficult to do more publicity back home. Now that our own salon has opened, it felt like a really good time to talk about what I’ve been up to since.”

Along with wife and business partner, Siobhan, Philipp joined Schwarzkopf Professional in November 2022, coinciding with the opening of their debut salon: Haug London Haus. Philipp and Siobhan have multiple awards wins and a wealth of experience between them. The couple has established themselves globally with their trend-led cut and colour, and their directional approach to education.

Proudly German, Schwarzkopf Professional is a natural fit for Philipp, who will be teaching cut and colour courses at home and internationally, as well as using the brand portfolio in the salon. “It feels great to be partnering with a German brand,” he says. “I have lots of experience working with them when I lived at home, so it feels nice and familiar. We also wanted to bring a bit of my heritage into the salon brand – Haug London Haus – so partnering up with a German brand is amazing.”

Advice from Philipp Haug

If you’re thinking of relocating to better your hairdressing career, Phillipp has some advice: “Do it! The amazing thing about being a hairdresser is that you can work very easily anywhere: that’s what makes it so exciting. Working in a new country, things are culturally very different, which really helps you to learn. I think gaining international experience is great.”

Phillipp says there was nothing he wished he’d known before moving: “I believe sometimes it’s good to not know too much and to be a little bit naive. That makes you brave – so just jump, and do it.”

Bottom line- be bold!
