Hair loss can be a concern particularly for people with Afro/Black hair type. Concerns might come from wearing particular styles that put tension on the scalp, the fixing of weaves and extensions, and caring for curly, coily hair. As a hairdresser, you know the mental and emotional impact that hair loss can have on your clients. Taking proactive steps to maintain healthy hair and scalp is essential. Luckily, Jacqui McIntosh, European education director for Avlon, shares her helpful tips. Jacqui addresses the unique needs and challenges that people with Afro hair may face when preventing hair loss. Hopefully, these tips will allow you to better advise your clients and ultimately help prevent hair loss.

Jacqui says: “Preventing hair loss requires a holistic approach that includes gentle handling, proper haircare practices, adequate moisture, a nutritious diet, and a healthy lifestyle. By implementing these tips, the hair will be nurtured and strengthened, and the risk of hair loss will be reduced. Consulting with a trichologist can provide further guidance for unique hair needs.”
Gentle handling and protective styling
- Choose hairstyles that minimise tension on the hairline and scalp, such as loose braids, twists, or protective updos. Avoid tight ponytails, high buns, and hairstyles that pull on the edges.
- If your client wears weaves or extensions, ensure they are correctly installed and not too tight. Avoid leaving them in for extended periods to prevent damage. Ensure they moisturise their scalp while wearing their weave using a light oil such as KeraCare Essential Oils.
Moisture and hydration
- Regular deep conditioning is required to keep Afro hair hydrated and cuticles re-aligned and soft. Clients can try KeraCare Restorative, which helps enhance elasticity, so the hair can better withstand styling.
- Before styling, apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil for hydration and protection. This will help retain moisture in the hair shaft and reduce breakage. Avlon suggests the KeraCare Overnight Moisturising Treatment.
Proper haircare practices
- Recommend a sulphate-free shampoo to your clients with Afro hair, and suggest they focus on the scalp. Clients should also utilise co-washing in between shampoo regimes. This will help minimise dryness and maintain moisture using a high-pH shampoo.
- A good hydrating, detangling shampoo will remove excess oils without stripping the hair or scalp. Tell clients to detangle hair carefully using a wide-toothed comb or fingers.
- Your clients can sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase or wear a satin/silk scarf or bonnet to minimise friction and protect hair from drying out.
Nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle
- Inform your clients of the importance of a healthy and nutritious diet. This includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These nutrients support overall hair health and growth.
- Drinking an adequate amount of water daily will keep the body and hair hydrated.
- Implementing stress-reducing activities like exercise and meditation will help minimise stress levels. This is important as high stress can contribute to hair loss.
Regular scalp care
- Massaging the scalp regularly can improve blood circulation and promote a healthy scalp environment.
- Minimise heat styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers. When using heat, apply a heat protectant to shield the hair from damage.
