Met Gala 2024 Best Hair Looks

As one of the most exciting nights in the fashion calendar, the Met Gala 2024 was mystical on so many levels, With strong references around fairytale storytelling, the red carpet was awash with high-shine and whimsical waves worthy of real life sleeping beauties. Here some of the best in the business reveal their favourite looks. What was yours? Tell us HERE.

Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International

“I really loved Iris Law’s look at this year’s Met Gala. Pixie cuts will always be one of my favourite haircuts and Iris wore hers incredibly – teamed with flippy ends, a choppy fringe and a wet finish. The style drew attention to her beautiful facial features and complimented her face shape. Paired with a wet finish, this gave the style further allure and looked so chic. After cutting in your pixie, I would use a heated styling iron to gently bend the longer length ends at the back to achieve flipped ends. I would then mix a gel and serum or cream together and apply this through the hair with a comb to give it a wet appearance. Finish with a hair spray such as Schwarzkopf Professional Silhouette Super Hold Spray to set the look in place and to give an extra dose of shine to the finished look.”

Tina Farey, Editorial Director at RUSH

“I loved the cool, laid back style of Kim K’s hair at this year’s Met Gala. From the front, Kim wore her hair very disheveled and textured beachy waves before coming together halfway down her back into a thick, loose braid giving off romantic vibes. The Met also saw the return of Kim’s platinum blonde that looked super clean and icy with no brass/yellow tones in sight, which perfected the look. To create this style, product is key. I would firstly start by prepping the hair with a product like KMS TameFrizz Smoothing Lotion on towel-dried hair before blow-drying, which will also help to avoid any frizz. I would then lightly tousle the hair into waves with a styling iron before using a product like KMS Hair Play Dry Texture Spray to add texture and a ‘messy’ finish to the waves. Once you’ve created your braid at the back, gently pull out some sections to give it a more relaxed finish and lightly mist over some of the Hair Play Dry Texture Spray again to hold the look in place all night long.”

Sabrina Dijkman, ALTERNA Ambassador

“Buns and chignons were a prominent theme at the Met this year and I loved some of the buns that the stars sported. Kylie Jenner wore a beautiful sleek chignon with curls left visible and pinned at the back, complete with a pretty pink rose to accentuate the look. Whereas Jennifer Lopez wore a more relaxed looking topknot, with small sections of hair left out around her face to give the look softness and a more effortless finish. We also saw some braided buns appear, including Taraji P. Henson whose braid was rolled into a topknot at the top of her hair, with the rest of her hair going into the bun being smooth and polished. For all buns and chignons my favourite must have product is the ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream, which can be applied through the hair before creating your bun for manageability and smoothness. The ALTERNA Caviar Replenishing Moisture Leave-In Smoothing Gelee is also another favourite of mine when creating sleek bun hairstyles to smooth the hair down, fight frizz and deliver high shine.”

Another vote for JLo….

Tracey Ann Smith, ASP Global Ambassador

“The Met Gala is always on my must watch list and 2024 certainly did not disappoint. For me Jennifer Lopez just oozed every once of glamour imaginable. Wearing a fabulous Schiaparelli couture gown, Jennifer kept it very simple with her hair, going for a relaxed top knot to ensure the statement was very much on her dress for the hottest red carpet of the year. The relaxed top knot is a trend in itself and one that we see on clients and consumers all the time. To recreate, it is important to prep the hair with a professional hydration shampoo and conditioner – even though the hair is up, the health is still vital. Next, you want to dry the hair, using your fingers to direct heat into the roots and give it that undone feeling. Next gather hair at the crown, ensuring it is fairly free and not sleek – keep in with that undone feeling and secure with a hair band, creating a high ponytail. Next, backcomb the hair slightly and then wrap around the base of the ponytail securing with bobby pins. Finish with a firm hold hairspray.”

Jay Birmingham, Jay B Haircare and Jay Birmingham Hair

“I love nothing more than the beautiful waves I saw on the gorgeous Kaia Gerber. Sometimes, simple and subtle are the best way to turn heads and Kaia and her team for me created the perfect look. Opting for an old Hollywood inspired blowout, Kaia opted for high volume at the front of the hair, with the locks flowing beautifully across her shoulder. To create this look it’s all about hair health – wash hair using Jay B Haircare Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner – this will not only nourish the hair but also create long lasting shine. Once prepped, opt for a deep side parting, parting the hair diagonally from the front to the crown. This will allow you to create a full, voluminous fringe. Using a large barrel brush, work around the hair, focusing volume at the roots and lifting the hair up and over the brush to create volume throughout. With the fringe, using the large barrel brush, dry the hair back on itself – to create the swooping effect. Finish with a shine spray to add the most luxurious finish.”

Gill Berry, Senior Creative Artist JOICO

“Ultra-long wavy hair flooded the green carpet this Met! Kendall Jenner’s hair can only be described as ethereal as her lightly curled extensions cascaded down her back. Her hip height extensions were fluffy and cloud like. I love using the JOICO KBOND20 treatment to achieve this healthy and hydrated finish, which is also great for extensions by the way! It felt very on brand for this year’s theme and resembled a fairytale coming to life on the steps of the Met. SJP was iconic as always, I always love keeping up with her looks and this year was no exception. Her mane of hair extensions in combination with her fantastic headpiece, I can only feel sorry for her poor neck by the end of the night! Completely worth it no doubt, the voluminous half up ponytail was embodying Carrie Bradshaw.”
