Blending blondes with Lea Shaw

Achieving the perfect shade of blonde is both a science and an art form; there are hundreds of different factors that could affect the final product. They say blondes have more fun, but being blonde is a full-time commitment. When we think blonde – we think beautiful, bright, and bouncy, but this isn’t always the case; sometimes we get dull blondes. This is due to the blonde contradicting your client’s colour palette.

Cool undertone

Blonde potential

To get the fullest potential out of your blonde, you need to carefully consider different shades to find the one that compliments your client’s complexion best. Checking your client’s skin undertone is a great way to decipher which shade will suit them best. Your skin undertone refers to any underlying colour beneath the surface of your skin which gives your skin it’s overall hue. Overtime, your skin tone can change with the seasons, but your skin undertone will remain constant. It’s the truest representation of what will suit your client the best.

Everyone has one of three undertones: cool, warm, or neutral. Skin that has a blue or pinky undertone is often referred to as being cooler toned, whilst a skin with a golden or peachy undertone is associated with being warmer. If you find that your client has neither of these colourings, then that means they’re most likely neutral. To figure out your client’s undertone, be sure to look at the colour of their veins and whether they suit silver or gold better – this is always a good starting point.

Warm undertone

So what’s best?

But which blonde suits each undertone the best? We chatted to Lea Shaw, JOICO’s UK Blonde Ambassador about the best shades of blend for a natural seamless look and how to choose the best for your client’s undertone.

“Choosing the best shades of blonde hair for a natural, seamless look involves considering factors such as skin tone, eye colour, natural base colour, maintenance requirements, and much more,” explains Lea.

“Fair skin tone shades like platinum blonde, champagne blonde, or icy blonde can complement that type of complexion beautifully. If you have a warm or olive skin tone, honey blonde, caramel blonde, or golden blonde shades closest to natural vase colour will work better.”

For clients with neutral undertones, they’re one of the lucky ones! Lea comments: “You have a lot more leeway with neutral undertones, as any shade of blonde will almost certainly work well. My favourite shade for neutral undertones is beige blondes, such as, sandy beige or golden-brown blondes, due to their versatility. They complement the neutral undertone beautifully and brighten the skin’s complexion in general.”
