Condition is everything when it comes to relaxed hair

The 2024 trend for shorter and high-gloss hair looks has seen many textured and curly hair clients opting for relaxer treatments to achieve a sleeker style. One of the most important parts of relaxed hair is how you maintain it and preserve its condition. Avlon’s European Education Director, Jacqui McIntosh shares her top tips to help clients keep their relaxed hair strong and healthy.

Hair is fashion

“We have to remember that hair is fashion,” says Jacqui. “The trend for a while has been to maintain or manipulate an individual curl pattern, now the new trend is wearing hair shorter and smoother in movement. This trend has definitely seen an increase in relaxer services. What’s great about product innovation is that we can now use relaxers in different ways to achieve different outcomes to meet our client’s expectations.

“Avlon Industries has and continues to change the game with relaxer systems. Our patented conditioning polymer within our relaxer system not only makes the hair feel soft, but also increases its elasticity and tensile strength. Which is essential to the health of relaxed hair.”

Relax with Avlon

“Avlon Affirm Relaxers are timed 13 minutes for mild application, 15 minutes for normal application and 18 minutes for resistant application,” explains Jacqui. “This ensures that the hair is at elevated pH for a controlled time period, reducing damage due to swelling and exposed ph. Our patented conditioners are applied after the removal to ensure deep conditioning and to bring down the pH level of the hair and scalp. The system retains up to 81% of fibre elasticity with the Affirm Creme Relaxer and up to 76% with Affirm Sensitive Scalp Relaxer.”

“My advice to hairdressers helping their clients to maintain, beautiful relaxed her is to always think about condition, ensuring that the application and removal of the relaxer is carried out professionally. Using the correct pH balanced shampoo and conditioner is key, along with having regular deep penetrating, reconstructive and bond treatments. Styling products with thermal protection is also very important.”
