Stay loyal

Darrel says it’s important he’s recognised for loyalty to the brands he works with. When Darrel finds a product or company he enjoys working with, which helps him create incredible looks and shares common values, he remains true to them. This creates integrity.

“…working with Procare is something I have dreamed of for so long. I have only ever used their foils, love the brand and know they are pushing the boundaries at all times. This completely resonates with me, and I wouldn’t dream of working with anyone else.” Darrel Starkey on Procare.

Believe in the brands you work with

Darrel says to show that you believe in the brands you work with. Authenticity is vital.

“If you believe in the brands and love the products, don’t hesitate to recommend them and shout about them. Share examples of you working with them and share any feedback with them too – brands love this and welcome all feedback which will allow them to be the best they can be – this shows your belief and support for them.” Darrel Starkey

Network and get to know the brands

Darrel says getting to know your brands is critical. Familiarity will stand you in good stead.

“Brands love getting to know those who use their products – it’s a relationship they appreciate. Never be afraid to connect with a brand, introduce yourself, share your work and be yourself. Whether at an event or simply engaging on Instagram – connect with your favourite brands and keep up the communication!” Darrel Starkey

Share your work

Be proud of what you accomplish and share your work. Be an advocate to get noticed.

“Brands are always on the lookout for work they can use, people they like and the creative visions of stylists coming to life, so be proud and share the work you create, tagging or sending to the brands to show what products you’ve used to create. It’s a great way to get them to notice and engage with you and is even better if they use it on their social media or to showcase their products.” Darrel Starkey

Work hard

We love working hard and learning new things! Darrel says putting time and effort into your craft is essential for success and career growth.

“Simple, but it is something important. Working hard and putting in the hours will allow you to progress to the next level. For me personally, I use every hour I can to learn. Education is the foundation of this industry and there is always something new which is unveiled for us to educate ourselves on. Running a column, a business, a brand and juggling your personal life and down-time is all a balancing act, but putting in all the hard work you can and excessive effort will get you where you dream to be. It is a process and always remember, it will be worth it.” Darrel Starkey
