The hairdressing industry generates a significant amount of waste – from hair clippings and used foils to chemical-laden products and plastic packaging. But now, salons across the UK have a simple, cost-effective way to reduce their environmental footprint with Recycle My Salon, a non-for-profit dedicated recycling initiative designed specifically for hair professionals.
Recycle My Salon is led by the Hair & Beauty Suppliers Association (HBSA) and supported by a large number of companies within the hairdressing industry playing their part in fighting climate change.
Recyle My Salon is a cost-effective waste management service that helps salons, barbershops, and freelancers recycle their waste in an easy, hassle-free way, from as little as £40 per collection. Instead of sending hair, foils and aerosol cans to landfill, salons can now divert their waste into sustainable solutions, such as using transforming hair into compost.
Things a salon can recycle with ease
Hair – recycle and compost any hair types and trimmings of any length.
Aluminium tubes – recycle your empty colour tubes as well as any other aluminium cosmetics tubes.
Foils – a whole head of foils, or the foil that you wrapped your sandwich in, id it’s made of aluminium if can go in the recycling bin.
Aerosol cans – most hairsprays and deodorants are recyclable, but they must be empty.
Bottle tops – recycle your metal bottle tops, commonly found in salons on wine bottles and olive oil bottles.
Drinks cans – empty soda or beer can be recycled.
Foil lids and chocolate foils – your pot noddle or yoghurt might have a recycle lid. Do the scrunch test to find out – scrunch the item into a ball in the palm of your hand and if it stays scrunched up in a ball it’s aluminium; if it springs back it’s made of plastic.
Recycle My Salon offers flexible pricing options to fit different budgets. The service provides collection bins, easy pick-up schedules, and certification to showcase a salon’s commitment to sustainability. Simply add a 50p or £1.00 ‘eco fee’ to each service to offset the cost of recycling your waste aluminium.
Recycling fact – scrunch your foil into a ball in the palm of your hand and then open your hand. If it stays scrunched up in a ball, it’s aluminium, but if it’s springs back up it’s made from plastic.
Recycling fact – In the UK we spray our way through 650 million aerosol cans every year – That’s roughly 27 in every household!
