GemCuts: The Artistry of Unfurling Colours by Stevie English

GemCuts is a creative collaboration by Bernadette Bewsick (cut and styling) and Stevie English (colour director) which shows off his truly exceptional colour skills. He calls the colour technique The Artistry of Unfurling Colours’. This is inspo on steroids for lovers of bold colour placement. And Stevie – who holds the Colour World  International Colour Genius 2023 title, is now 4x winner of the Australian Creative Colourist award at the AIHAs.

For this collection Stevie and Bernadette were inspired by the craft of gem-cutting. This is a great example of how you can harness inspiration from different skills and professions.

Stevie English on the colour in GemCuts?

“In a parallel universe, the world of fashion and beauty has evolved into display of hairdressing artistry called “GemCuts.”

No longer do stylists merely choose hairstyles and hair colours; instead, they embark on a transformative journey with futuristic gem cutters who possess the unique ability to unlock the hidden potential within their clients’ hair.

Each gem cutter, known as “Chroma Artisan,” is blessed with a mysterious gemstone embedded in their scissors or tint brush, which bestows upon them the power to perceive the intrinsic essence of an individual’s hair and personality.

They understand not only the ideal hairstyle, but also the perfect hue that complements the person’s characteristics. Gem cutter hairdressers are revered for their craft as well as for their empathetic approach. They invest time in understanding the dreams and aspirations of their clients, seeking to craft a hairstyle that aligns with the person’s innermost desires.

Like the creation of beautiful jewels, a masterfully executed cut and colour is an intriguing expression of the client’s life or traits. The synergistic marriage of cut and colour perfectly symbolises personal statements like freedom, creativity, vivaciousness, confidence, boldness or alternative thought. The artistry doesn’t just lie in the precise cutting techniques or the vibrant hair colours; it also stems from the emotional connection and personal touch the artisans infuse into their work.”

Cutting gemstones is a process by which rough crystal is turned into polished, transparent, and brilliant gemstones, as we commonly know them to be. This process also designates a specific shape for the stone. Both of these attributes – cut and shape – work together to perfectly enhance the colour, clarity, and shine of the gem. ( Sinkankas, Gem Cutting: A Lapidary’s Manual, 2014)

“GemCuts: The Artistry of Unfurling Colours” is a tale of self-discovery, artistic brilliance, and the profound impact of an industry that celebrates individuality. It reminds us that beauty lies not in conformity but in embracing our unique identities, much like the sparkling facets of an uncut gem waiting to be unveiled.”
