Building teams can feel like a thankless task when someone then ups and leaves… but chatting to salon owners Tim Scott-Wright and Ken Picton is encouraging! They each have a generous attitude to staff moving on, and offer great ideas and encouragement on how you can feel confident of your salons success being helped by, but not relying on any one person.
On the panel…
Tim Scott-Wright launched The Hair Surgery in 2014, staying true to his home county by locating in the Midlands. Whilst being part of the up-and-coming talents in the UK (Tim had won the Midlands Hairdresser of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2007 – putting him in the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame), he eschews the bigger city and is growing a regional salon of repute while remaining connected to press and industry associations. Having benefitted from being part of a dynamic and successful team during his earlier years in the industry, Tim has gone on to support his own crew of stylists and colourists with a generous view of sharing the limelight. Most recently one of his leading staff members has gone forward to open her own business… Tim is there to cheer her on.
Ken Picton is the current President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and owner of one super-size destination salon in Cardiff. Heading up a team of 35 staff on one premises (embracing hair and beauty), Ken knows plenty about team changeovers, new arrivals and departures. He is phlegmatic in his approach and has a down-to-earth take on the everyday matters of maternity leaves, retirements and returns, as well as those leaving to open up on their own. As well as his own success, Ken champions the success of his team players and the Ken Picton salon counts trophies including British Hairdressing Salon of the Year, twice winner of Salon of the Year by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, winners of Wales Southwest Hairdresser of the Year and British Colourist of the Year. He is unafraid to share the limelight and rolls with the punches if someone moves on.
