Jim Shaw: Why expertise matters

With almost 40 years in the industry, we talk to Jim Shaw – owner of Toni & Guy, Billericay – about why expertise in hairdressing and barbering really matters.

When it comes to clients, there are so many reasons why they should visit an expert and reputable hairdresser. One of the most important being trusting the hairdresser with their hair and confident that they will receive fantastic hair and leave the salon happy. Not only that, should they have any areas of concern with their hair, or if they need any advice on their hair and products they are using – they will feel assured their hairdresser will be knowledgeable and be able to provide them with the best advice and recommendations possible. Should there be any challenges with the hair, for example in the colour changing process, hairdressing experts who have been in the industry for a long period of time should have the experience in dealing with these challenges and rectifying them quickly.

It’s also beneficial for brands to work with hairdressers who have been in the industry for a long time and that are experts in their craft. Of course working with young creatives who are great on social media is also beneficial but when it comes to hairdressers who have been in the industry for a long period of time and that have established themselves, this brings a different area of expertise to the brand, new support from the hairdressers loyal clientele and will add to the brands reputation and positive image.

The same goes for publications who may want comments from hair experts for features they are working on – they will have the confidence that they will be able to receive fantastic, in depth and varied quotes from hairdressing experts who have a wealth of experience in their field and be more inclined to use them for new articles they are working on and use them as their first point of call for quotes.

Decade by Jim Shaw

What’s more, we need reputable, long-term hairdressing experts within our industry to be able to educate, grow up and coming hairdressers and to help provide stylists with more advanced training to better their skills and knowledge in hairdressing to better themselves as a hairdresser. Having experts in defined areas, such as men’s hairdressing, barbering, curls, extensions, is also great for stylists who want to invest in training and education, widen their areas of expertise and become more knowledgeable in different areas of the craft.
