The Mixie Trend

We love it when a new haircut trend makes waves. Last year it was all about short, quirky cuts like the mullet, the shag, cropped and pixie cuts according to Dylan Brittain (owner of Rainbow Room International’s George Square salon, Schwarzkopf UK ambassador and international artistic director at Rainbow Room International). This year though, Dylan says the shag and the pixie have been merged together to make something new and exciting for 2022. Meet the Mixie Cut! It’s shoulder length at the back and a pixie cut on top, proving you really can get the best of both worlds with your cut. And, let’s face it, this one makes a serious statement. Client having trouble deciding whether to go short or long at their next appointment? Problem solved!

Dylan says that the lockdowns inspired this style, thanks to the pandemic making us want to be more adventurous; “So many clients are starting to become more experimental with their looks and are opting for creative cuts just like this,” he explains. “With being indoors a lot more, many of us are also in the habit of doing less with our hair and are looking for haircuts and styles that are effortless and require little to no styling.” If it’s low maintenance – yet super cool – your client wants, then this is the haircut to recommend. All it needs is a little sea salt spray for texture or matte pomade/wax at the top – no time-consuming heat styling required.

So who suits it? Apart from ensuring the cut is tailored to your client’s face shape, it turns out, pretty much everyone can wear it! “It works well for most hair types,” says Dylan. “Fine and thick hair types suit this look but it’s a particularly fantastic haircut choice for those with fine hair as it gives the appearance of thicker, fuller hair on the top.” And those with curly hair will love it too. “Add in some texturizing spray and this can really help to enhance the curls and draw attention to them.”
