Lockdown caused most industries to rethink how business was done. Hairdressing may have faced more challenges than most; however salon owner Samuel Chapman believed many of the changes he implemented were for the best… And are here to stay!
The Brighton salon owner introduced an online store, developed his own product line and introduced some much-needed changes to salon culture; all of which he believes changed business for the better.
The launch of the online store
If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that cutting and colouring is best left to the experts! Whilst Samuel couldn’t stop his clients from taking to the kitchen scissors, he could ensure that their hair was well cared for by providing them with professional products. With the doors of his salon closed, Sam decided to launch an online store to cater to client needs – and keep money coming in. With the launch of the store clients were able to purchase the Samuel Chapman Hair care range which is entirely sulphate-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free and made with 100% recyclable packaging. Samuel’s eponymous range includes wash, rinse and treatment products as well as a detangler that promises to simplify and beautify clients’ haircare regimes. Samuel’s team are all product aficionados, ready and eager to share their knowledge. They were also on hand during lockdown to answer any hair related questions that clients may have.
The importance of taking deposits
Coming out of lockdown, hair appointments were a priority for many. Unfortunately, the demand hasn’t stopped no-shows and last-minute cancellations, which is why Samuel’s online booking system now includes a mandatory deposit. The deposit required for an appointment at Samuel Chapman salon is 20% of the total amount; the appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, then that deposit will be lost. Samuel says that this has significantly reduced the numbers of cancellations and is something that is definitely here to stay.
The value of the hairdresser
The love and appreciation hairdressers have received since reopening can be felt by all. In the past, hairdressing was often viewed as an unchallenging job; but the pandemic resulted in a new-found respect for the craft. Samuel says that he definitely feels more valued, and that people now recognise the high level of skill required to create professional looking hair.
Since reopening, Samuel is looking for even more ways to enhance his offering. His plans include the introduction of hair loss services, and a second salon to expand his reach. So, watch this space and remember his name, you’ll certainly be seeing a lot more of it!
