The haute couture shows in January 2021 were a triumph of optimism – that they could happen at all is uplifting. A schedule of films and installations in Paris and Rome ensured that no Covid restrictions were broken in the name of fashion. The creativity and invention of technique were tangible in clothes and, happily, hair. Glorious texture from the wettest, shiniest gels to tightest of braids, opulent accessories and headbands. We rejoice in the calibre of show that took place, albeit virtually, and the hair was awesome.

- From Rome, we took inspiration from the inimitable Guido Palau. The hair he gave for the Dior show was all about length; long hair braided and wrapped close to the head, or allowed to hang low. Even the boys enjoyed longer styles.
- For the design house Giambattista Valli, the drama of Odile Gilbert’s work was shown to extraordinary effect! That volume… so daring. Yet we want it!
- As always, Sam McKnight showed playful invention – his use of ornaments and glistening, wet-look finish was sublime.
- Back for Valentino, Guido and Dame Pat McGrath on make-up were simply striking.
- Damien Boissinot for Chanel was delightful. Tight, groomed, polished buns, ponytails and bobs. Some with garlands. Some not. Both adorable.
We can’t track down who did the hair at Schiaparelli. There’s no sign of a credit on socials. A pity as it looks like a fab show to have worked! Altogether, we salute you session stylists. It’s been a rotten 12 months but you display daring and panache – we’re impressed.
