YIKES… we’re only one week in to Corona Virus quarantine/social distancing and we can’t help noticing that the internet had exploded with new users of sharing apps and video calls! Instagram is buzzing hot with live messages and everyone is scrambling to communicate, share and educate online.
Grumpy old man’s advice
All this activity is good, BUT don’t underestimate the importance of thinking before you post or jump online. These social media platforms are great for promoting your brand and building your client community ready for when we can all get back to ‘normal’. It’s vital that you plan this new burst of visibility.
Remember the rules of branding! 60 years ago, American brand McGraw Hill Magazines put together an amazing ad to remind us of the rules of marketing. It’s called the ‘grumpy old man’ ad – pictured above, and we love it.
The original ad appeared in 1958. It was created by Henry Slesar of New York ad agency Fuller & Smith & Ross. In 1999, it was named the “Best Business-to-Business Ad of the 20th Century” by Advertising Age’s Business Marketing magazine.
The image is noticeable but it’s the text of the ad which you need to keep in mind. We’ve pasted it here so it’s easier to read.
“I don’t know you.
I don’t know your company.
I don’t know your company’s product.
I don’t know what your company stands for.
I don’t know your company’s customers.
I don’t know your company’s record.
I don’t know your company’s reputation.
Now, what was it you wanted to sell me?”
Ensure that your brand has a strong identity and that you don’t assume your existing clients and potential ones know everything about you. Remember to include the points in the text of the ad at regular intervals. Break up your IG feed with images and quotes that reflect this. We had speakers recently at our LAB events which help, and see our podcast with Sophia Hilton HERE
