The gritty yet glamorous Downtown district of Los Angeles proved an ideal setting for the Davines World Wide Hair Tour 2016 this weekend. We relished the programme of shows, presentations and parties which enthralled some 1800 delegates. At the iconic Orpheum theatre, the days rolled out shows ranging from the presentation of the World Style Contest final. (UK’s Bec Sun picking up prize for Best Colour) to Angelo Seminara’s encounter with a beach girl, and Allilon Education’s 14 ‘Change’ models. Thrilling indeed! For an international brand with global appeal, the Davines World Style Contest (WSC) is an important date on any Davines salon calendar. Earlier this year, for the first time, the UK ran a national heat to find a competitor for the international final, which takes place in London on October 19th. Competition was fierce and the battle deservedly won by Sophie Harris at Blue Tit, London. As she prepares for her appearance on stage next week, she tells us about her competition experience and what she has planned for the World Wide Hair Tour. It encompasses the international final of the World Style Contest, now only days away:
Congratulations Sophie on your win at the very first UK WSC. Is this the first time that you’ve done hair on stage at a competition?
This was the first time, but it definitely won’t be the last. I have had such a great experience with this competition. It has opened so many doors for me in my career.
What compelled you to enter the competition?
I wanted to take this opportunity to push myself and to be given the chance to showcase my work to a professional audience. When it comes to my career I like to keep myself busy and working on all sorts of fun and exciting projects.
We LOVE your winning look. Tell us about your inspiration when preparing to enter?
My show look was based on Asia – the continent’s architecture, fashion cultures and history. I follow Japanese fashion blogs. Street-style and designers and I’m constantly inspired by their use of simple lines creating bold and over-exaggerated shapes, which I portrayed in my final look.
How did your look evolve as you worked on it?
I like to focus the cut and colour in harmony in all of my work. I love combining cut and colour techniques to produce an exciting look, especially playing with shine lines and graduation.
What was the best part of the experience for you?
My favourite parts were seeing the look develop throughout the day and the reaction of the crowd.
Did the experience teach you a lot?
Yes – especially as it was my first competition. It was tough controlling my nerves on the day. Taking part has made me feel more confident to present at more competitions.
Can you give us a taster of what you are planning for the World Wide Hair Tour and World Style Contest?
You will see on the day. But the look will definitely be more refined and have a greater impact than my previous style.
Are you looking forward to it?
I can’t wait… and I’m excited to see the other competitors’ entries as well.
Good luck Sophie!

After plenty of teasing in recent weeks, we were rapt to see at last the inaugural British presentation of Davines Hair On Stage, played out to a packed audience in London’s Central Saint Martins a few days ago. The night embraced the UK final of the World Style Contest (scooped by Blue Tit salon’s Sophie Harris – yay!), and shows from Allilon Education (whoop whoop), Blue Tit (big respect), and Angelo Seminara (the ultimate). We partied late, and returned to our desks inspired.

Coolio! The Italian brand Davines is bringing the 10th edition of its World Style Contest to London, and any Davines salon is invited to join in. This is an annual hunt for exciting, emerging talent, and kicks off now with the first stage entry procedure. This is the important bit: The World Style Contest invites Davines clients to present their vision of fashion forward, presented as a total look that best suits their model.
Okay? Now how to do that:
You need 5 photos of the same look showing before then after front, profile and overall look. Send them off with a video of you creating the look. Low res on a phone is fine – plus a picture of you and a completed entry form and consent form. All available here:
Essentially, World Style Contest is split into 3 stages:
• enter now with a finished look photograph, plus video showing you creating the look
• get through to phase 2 in London in May. Bring your look to life on a model to impress the judges
• win this national stage and you could find yourself in the spotlight for the international grand final in October.
