Salon interiors: Thinking outside the box

Salon interiors: Thinking outside the box
Harris & Fox

Remember the obsession with art deco, with its flock wallpaper, gold ornate mirrors and fringed lampshades? Then there was the shift to minimalism, think crisp white walls and not a salon tool in sight. Whatever your preference, the secret to great salon interiors is that it reflects you and your brand. But to turn it into an awesome one, you need to think outside the box too.

Harris and Fox

The tale behind Harris & Fox, a stunning salon in Aberdeen, is a simple but utterly delightful one. It’s just a man – Ryan Harris and his Fox Hound Hendrix – setting up a calm and tranquil spot for clients to relax and enjoy their experience. Filled with plants, tons of natural light, wood floors and polished concrete walls, the eco/vegan salon is heaven. Plus there is a fab fish tank to add that extra touch of zen.

Location, location, location

Even its location on Rosemount Viaduct – an area fast-becoming known as the well-being and vegan quarter or Aberdeen – reflect Ryan and what he is about. With a cruelty free and vegan beauty parlour, a new vegetarian and refined sugar-free cafe, plus a vegan café/restaurant on the same street, Harris & Fox is in good company.

Best kept secret

Yet despite it’s quirky industrial look and devotion to PETA-approved/cruelty free products, the salon’s real point of difference is the use of it’s downstairs space. Ryan, who was nominated for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year in 2013, had a vision to create a cool living room area that is comfortable and homely – complete with bookshelf and record player for clients to use. This relaxing space is used by clients when they get their colour done. The idea being, that once they’ve got the treatment on, they go down to the ‘living room’ to relax as the colour develops – it means they can go and chill out away from the busy salon and really just enjoy the whole experience.

Out of hours

Harris & Fox is has also successfully immersed itself within the community, with Ryan renting out the space twice weekly to a locally yoga instructor to host classes. He has also hosted two Dog Days, which saw local businesses host stalls with bespoke canine goodies.

How much thought is put into the look and feel of your salon interior? and are you involved with the community? We hope we’ve got you thinking.
