Smitha Islam is Head of People and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at Blue Tit London. She joins the Respectfully podcast to share with host Nicky Pope how the salon group has won its B Corp certification. You’ll find the conversation enlightening and positive. Despite the intense scrutiny required to decide if a company is right for B Corp certification, Smitha reports that Blue Tit London is 100% in favour, and ready to help others take the same journey.  [scroll down for notes on what B Corp means].

With 13 locations in London, Smitha and the Blue Tit team found working to become, and maintain the label B Corp works as shorthand for all they stand for. The label signifies the values, endeavours and practices at this dynamic company. Listen to Smith explain what the process entails, and most importantly, why it’s worth it.

During the conversation you will find the answer to many questions including what motivated the Blue Tit London company to start a lengthy and demanding process! Smitha is clear and transparent about how much effort is required. She is unequivocally in favour of the value of gaining the B Corp label, but acknowledges how rigorous and challenging it proves. Yet, her take on the rewards is uplifting.

Nicky and Smitha chat about how the hairdressing industry specifically can benefit from understanding how beneficial B Corp can prove. They talk through the ‘headline wins’ and what happens going forward.

Thanks to our hosts at Sta Studios in central London – we love their content creation and podcast studio!

B Corp in a nutshell

B Corp is a globally recognised standard. Any B Corp has established social and environmental principles that sit right at the heart of its business. Via its products, practices and profits, it aims to benefit all and not to harm. These values are embedded into a mission statement, and included in articles of association, underpinned by a promise to do social and environmental good. An ethical business that rewards all stakeholders, and not just shareholders, being B Corp goes beyond lip service. You have to show up and do as you believe.
