Preparing for a career in hairdressing after college

We teamed up with business coach, Penny Etheridge on a visit to East Sussex college, Hastings to speak to hairdressing students about the next steps upon completion of their course.

Penny kicked off the session with some interview advice, covering what’s appropriate and what’s not. Thinking about the way you make a first impression and consider how someone will do this to you. Penny discussed how to show your personality through your clothes but still looking smart. The importance of styling your own hair, and ensuring you take pride in your appearance for such an opportunity.

Achievements

Penny went on to explain what employers want to hear when it comes to achievements. Ultimately, if it’s something you’re proud of then it’s an achievement… Your achievements are personal to you. If you’ve accomplished something that you feel proud of then shout about it.

Interview Questions

Penny covered some of the standard questions that may be asked at interviews and helped the students prepare for these.

Goal setting

When you consider interview prep, figuring out your goals is certainly something to consider. To be top of your game for an interview Penny advised student to not only prepare their goals, but to consider how. they are going to achieve these goals to really wow the interviewer.

Why hairdressing?

We also had a bit of time with the student’s too. We used this time as an opportunity to show them the exciting events that are out there, whether that’s to just attend or present at.

We want to encourage all young hairdressers to stay in the industry for as long as possible, so showing them the fun, experimental side is something to inspire and excite them.

At the end of the session, students received a Goldwell goodie bag, courtesy of Kao Salon Division.
