Respect: What is the butterfly bob?

Andy: “The butterfly bob is a great choice for clients who don’t want a traditional ‘block’ bob. The butterfly bob encompasses short and long layers and texture for an effortless finish. The length usually hits between the chin and the shoulders. The bob features a longer layer around the cheekbones with shorter, more feathered layers around the face to compliment facial features. The ends of the hair should be cut bluntly to give fullness. With that in mind, this haircut is particularly great for clients with thinner hair types who want their hair to appear thicker.

“The beauty of this style is that it works for all face shapes. For clients with a round or square face shape, the layers help to soften the face and create the illusion of a longer face shape.

“In terms of styling, this haircut is a low-maintenance style. Even with little to no styling, it will look incredibly sophisticated. However, it will require maintenance and salon visits to keep the cut looking its best. The layers will need trimming, and the bluntness of the ends kept thick and fresh.”

Respect: How would you best style this bob?

Andy: “You can style the butterfly bob in many ways depending on your clients’ desired finish. If they want a fuller, more glamorous look, use rollers or a hairdryer and round brush to create a more voluminous, bouncy blow-dry look. A mousse is a great product to use before creating these styles to prep the hair and give it hold.

“Another way to style this cut is by using heated styling irons or tongs to create a soft wave in the hair for movement. You can then use a serum or oil with a hairspray to keep the waves in place and to create gloss. I love the Goldwell Dualsenses Just Smooth Taming Oil.

“If your client wants a lower maintenance way to style the look at home, a texturising spray/salt spray is a must-have. This can be scrunched into damp hair for texture and to enhance the layers. Alternatively, once dry, they can use matte products like a pomade or wax to break up the layers and give the style further movement and depth. The Goldwell Style Sign Creative Texture Texturiser Mineral Spray is one of my favourite products for achieving an effortless, tousled finish.”

Thanks to Andy for sharing these tips and tricks for looking after the butterfly bob. We look forward to seeing how his hot-trend plays out! If you want to explore other trends set to dominate this A/W click here
