The value of scissors

According to Japanese scissor experts Kasho, the average hairdresser spends 67 days a year (that’s 1,600 hours) holding their scissors. Averaging at 2,400 uses per year. That’s a serious amount of work for your number-one tool.

With 2025 set to be the year of the haircut, choosing ergonomically designed, precision-crafted scissors isn’t a luxury, it’s a must. At an average of £32 per cut, the right pair can help generate up to £76,800 a year.

Your scissors aren’t just tools. They’re an investment in your craft, your career, and your future.

Director of Kasho UK, Benjamin Shipman, says: “These statistics reveal why it’s important to invest in a quality pair of scissors, whatever your budget. If you spend £600 on a pair of professional scissors that can last 15 years, they can generate more than £1 million over that period, making them cheaper – and more essential – than a daily cup of coffee!”

Top priorities when choosing a pair of scissors

Are they the right fit for you? You’ll be using your scissors 2,400 times per year, so they need to fit your hand and cutting style. Consider the design and whether it feels comfortable in your hand. Ergonomic design features such as an easily adjustable screw or offset handles can help reduce strain on your hand and wrist, avoiding short and long-term injury.

What are they made from? The material your scissors are made from will significantly affect their cutting effectiveness and durability.  Scissors crafted from high-quality, lightweight steel will not only aid with balance, helping you to perfect your skills, but they’ll also fight hand fatigue.

What blade length is best for you? Generally, shorter blades ranging from 4.5” to 5.5”, offer greater precision, making them ideal for intricate detailing and point cutting. Longer blades, spanning 6” or more, are better suited for cutting bulkier sections and are also more suited to the scissor-over-comb method of cutting, making them a popular choice for barbers.
