The Fellowship presents Hair & Vision held a fantastic event in Edinburgh. Sponsored by Wella Professionals, The Cut at Medusa Hairdressing is an event dedicated to exploring the importance of the cut in the hairdressing industry. We like this! Bringing stylists and colourists together, The Cut highlights the history, trends and techniques in this industry sector. We love that industry professionals came together for a live hairdressing event. So much can happen when we interact in person. Think of all the learning and inspiration.
So, what happened at The Cut?
Colin McAndrew, Medusa founder and Fellowship Board member, and Anna Mackew, Wella Studio leader, introduced the artists and brought the team to the floor for the creative session.
Steph Gallagher
Steph Gallagher, current 2023 F.A.M.E. team member and Stylist of Wonderland, demonstrated a creative, grunge textured look inspired by the 80’s dance. Interesting! Steph shared her thought process and story behind the look.
Frazer Wallace
International educator and stylist Frazer Wallace at The Haus Studio, brought to life a short, sharp bob whilst transforming this with a texturised fringe. Frazer then explained the link between the cut and the colour and why the pairing of both is essential.
Luke Ellis
Next up was Scottish barber Luke Ellis of Edinburgh Barbershop, who showed a trending men’s look, working with clippers and creating a texturised top section with a faded back and sides section. Luke shared how the barbering sector is progressing, with classic ‘trends’ now transforming into requested looks instead of typical trends.
Steph Gallagher and Peter Mellon
Colin introduced the Q&A section featuring current F.A.M.E. Team member Steph Gallagher and past F.A.M.E. Team member and Medusa director Peter Mellon. The duo held a relaxed conversation whilst conducting a mini-interview, discussing their different experiences and journeys. The pair also shared with the audience their favourite moments and how their respected teams bonded over the creative industry they love.
Colin welcomed the headliners to the stage: Wella International educator and award-winning hairdresser Charlie Taylor and Medusa director and educator Paul Paterson.
Charlie Taylor
Charlie introduced her tequila sunrise look, pairing together a beautiful blend of fuschia, orange and sunshine yellow alongside a sleek, defined bob. During the live cut, Charlie shared how the origins of cutting remain the same and explained how every hairstyle has an excellent cut as its foundation. She explained how cuts will never go out of fashion and why this will remain a staple skill that all stylists should master.
Paul Paterson
Paul talked to the audience through his colour-blocking technique, partnered with a disconnected short crop and a blunt staple fringe to complete the look. Paul explained his love for cutting and how the variation of clients keeps the industry on its toes as the trends are forever changing.
