The 60s are calling

2023 may have been all ‘Come on, Barbie, let’s go party,’ but in 2024, it’s the cool poise of Priscilla Presley’s distinctive bouffant hair which is having a moment. Thanks to Sofia Coppola’s new film Priscilla, the trending 60s hairdo is attracting consumer attention. What’s more, influential colourists pronounce ‘brunette’ the hair colour of the year. Increasingly clients will want to recreate Priscilla’s look – whether in part with a sense of volume and shape, or full-on retro reincarnation. Bring out the backcombing brush and get your hands on a good hairspray. The 60s are calling.

60s hair by Anna Cofone

Lana Del Ray certainly pulled off Priscilla Presley’s doll-like hair trend in the current Skims Valentine’s Day campaign. Her exaggerated volume at the root plus length gives us a major 60s beauty-queen aesthetic. And we liked it. Session stylist Anna Cofone, whose work we adore, created this stunning style.

This ‘doll-like’ hair trend also stormed the Grammys 2024, as seen with Miley Cyrus, who sported a stunning 60s look and says, “I’d like to personally thank my hair…”. We’d be thanking our hair too if it looked as fabulous as hers. We admire the more-is-more silhouette, which undoubtedly gives Priscilla vibes. In her acceptance speech Miley thanked her godmother Dolly Parton who often rocks the voluminous hair trend. Miley says, “[Dolly Parton] I felt your fairy dust everywhere, I put a little extra in my hair could you tell?”. Yes Miley, we could tell.

Marc Jacobs Wonder

If you still need to see pictures from Marc Jacobs’ 40th-anniversary show Wonder, now is the time. Lead stylist Duffy stepped into the big hair trend, creating jaw-dropping ‘doll hair’ looks. Using wigs (two per model we hear), Duffy put together cotton-candy-looking bouffant styles. Exaggerated false lashes and doll-like makeup helped to ramp up the 60s beauty-queen look even more.

It’s your turn

Recreating the 60s doll-hair trend could be a lot of fun; just ensure you have an excellent volumising haircare routine nailed for clients. Try a mousse or volumising spray pre-blow-drying for those with naturally fine or flat hair types. Follow with your go-to blow-dry styling products for bouncy volume. It will be super-fun watching all the Priscilla-inspired and doll-hair-looks hit social media. Make sure to get yours up quickly. To keep you inspired, just have Elvis playing on repeat…
