Balayage is a great option for your clients with all hair types and textures looking to add depth or brightness. Bonus? It’s low maintenance and ideal for busier clients or those who don’t want to commit fully to a new colour. But did you know it’s possible to have a ‘bleach-free balayage’ by opting for hair extensions to create the look instead? Spectrum One Hair Extensions founder Katy Grimshaw is super keen on this idea.
Katy Grimshaw
Katy says: “Creating a balayage with hair extensions is a great option for clients who want to avoid bleaching their hair. It also works well for clients with existing colour in their hair who could never get it light enough to achieve their desired look.
It’s a great, low commitment version that you can wear and take out for as little, or as long as you’d like, giving clients great options.”
Katy explains the perfect blended colour for a bleach-free hair extension balayage.
She says: “The key to a perfect balayage blend with hair extensions is to nail your ‘bridging tone’. This is the colour you need to drag through the extensions to blend the base colour (your client’s natural colour) and the balayage colour, blending the break between where the base colour stops and the extensions start. I would usually opt for half or one shade lighter than the base or root colour. This depends on how high you’re bringing your balayage shade up the hair, for your bridging tone”
Spectrum One Hair Extensions
Spectrum One Hair Extensions have pre-balayage options in their professional range to make life easy, how good? However, Katy recommends mixing multiple colours for a custom look. She says: “It depends on the client’s hair and the overall look you’re trying to achieve as to what you’re going to mix. I reach for tapes as my go-to technique for this look, but you can also use wefts or nanos. I love mixing colours to get a seamless custom blend, so I made sure that Spectrum One Hair Extensions were available to purchase in 50-gram packs instead of large packs. When creating a balayage with a tape technique, I would choose a soft brunette as my bridging tone which could be a flat, piano or mixed colour. Then I can sandwich the pre-balayaged tape with that. It all depends on the client’s hair, but that’s an example!”
