Rainbow Room International Young Artistic Team

It is so important that we support and encourage young people within the industry to keep it growing. Award-winning Scottish salon group, Rainbow Room International are continuously supporting this. Last month we saw them bring their aspiring stylists to HairClubLive’s #OpenChairNight in Glasgow, now we hear they’ve formed a Young Artistic Team, where younger salon team members who were intrigued by the Rainbow Room Artistic Team can grow their skills and get involved.

David Nicolson, salon director at the Royal Exchange Square branch, presented the idea to help young team members grow. David started the team with Linda Stewart, co-founder of the salon group. We love that artistic teams encourage stylists to push boundaries and practice their craft in a whole new way. These teams also offer salons an opportunity to learn and be creative while connecting with other team members on a closer level.

Suzie McGill, Artistic Team leader, will head up the Young Artistic Team with other Artistic Team members and salon directors. Together they will teach the youngsters what it takes to be in an artistic team.

Rainbow Room International invited stylists of all levels from across the salons to join the Young Artistic Team. There was only one condition for joining: Members had to commit to a full year and attend all sessions provided. At the end of the year, participating team members will receive a certificate. Of course, the best part is that after a year team members will have gained skills and confidence to help them move forward in their careers.

So, what’s involved?

Seminars for the Young Artistic Team Members include:

  • A session with Artistic Team director and Uddingston salon director, Suzie McGill looking at haircuts, welding shapes, fashion and colours and how they are influencing trends at the moment
  • Royal Exchange Square salon director, David Nicolson on Razor Cutting
  • A session with Artistic Team member and Bearsden salon director, Coco McMahon on cutting patterns, razor work and disconnection
  • A session with Artistic Team member and Ayr salon director, Riccardo Corvi on stage presentation
  • An art class with Artistic Team member and East Kilbride salon director, Jackie Curran practicing abstract art and working with different shapes and forms.

All sessions are hands on, so the team can learn and recreate the looks themselves.

Exciting opportunties

To ensure Young Artistic Team members grow in skills and confidence they are encouraged to get involved with events and shoots with the Rainbow Room International Artistic Team. Some members of the young team are already involved in fantastic opportunities. This includes helping with the latest Artistic team photoshoot, showing a live model at the latest Rainbow Room International Creative Day and working backstage at Fashion Week. Woah…lots of room for learning and creating here!

Coco McMahon

Coco McMahon, Artistic Team member and Bearsden salon director says, “This is a great opportunity for young stylists across all our salons. There’s so much content for them and it’s extremely well planned. It also allows them to come together and make friendships whilst opening communication between the salons. All stylists involved have absolutely loved it. They turn up at seminars super enthusiastic and dedicated. For salon directors, it’s been brilliant taking part in the seminars, seeing our stylists excited and building their confidence and skills. We even have a group chat where they can share their ideas with us. It’s great for the future of the company too, as these stylists can move up the ranks. It ensures constant growth.”

David Nicolson

David Nicolson says: “The idea came about because of lockdowns and the lack of opportunities for our ‘new’ stylists to get involved in the creative side. With all the resources within the company, we had a duty to stretch our directors. They needed to share their experiences and skills and break down the barriers that our young teams had about ‘The Art Team’. Involving everyone that wanted to grow let us share time and wisdom and has been amazing for mental welfare. As word gets out about what happens at these classes the numbers are growing. And there is an impact on the salon floor with a positive response from our clients. Everyone wins.”
