The British Hair & Beauty Collective

There’s a new dynamic in hairdressing since the Pandemic; a desire for a more unified industry representation. We have many fine and productive bodies and associations to represent and fight for various sections of hairdressing and beauty. But no single identifiable voice for channelling the views and opinions of the many. Until now perhaps.

The British Hair & Beauty Collective

The Collective

Bringing together the communities that thrive variously, there is now the British Hair & Beauty Collective which invites individuals, businesses, and organisations within the hair, barber, beauty and nail sector to join. The Collective is devised by The Hair and Barber Council (headed by Keith Conniford), and Salon Owners United (headed by Collette Osborne).  Each brings a ready-made audience of 10s of thousands, meaning the Collective is likely to start with a strong voice already.

The concept is to put ‘one voice’ together to ensure we can be heard by Government. Currently it’s tricky to identify and pass forward ‘industry’ opinion as we have arguably a fragmented approach to lobbying for change. The Collective doesn’t take over from any already organised body, but will hope to give a back-up… a way of saying to Government look what the industry thinks, wants, needs. See what the Collective says.

We’ve had a look at how it will operate and these are the key points to absorb and help decide if this is for you:

  • To join up as an individual, business or organisation, you must also be a member, sponsor or affiliate of one of The Hair and Barber membership groups. Either State Registered, Associate member, a Corporate member or an Affiliate supporter. These groups are currently the Hair and Barber Council and Salon Owners United,
  • Do you have a strong desire to see the industry represented as ‘one voice’ to Government
  • Do you want to work together to finally regulate the industry
  • Individual members are able to apply to be part of The Collective, and businesses and industry organisations who apply and are included, can have a maximum of 2 members within the Collective, but will only have one vote.
  • The intention is for everyone to be able to ‘collaborate’ and work with the Collective to raise issues that affect the industry overall.
  • To always promote a professional image of the sector and The Collective to the trade press, to consumers, the industry as a whole and to politicians. In addition to actively promote the benefits of a career in the industry.

Moving forward

Importantly, there are no costs for joining the Collective. This is about trying to distil what we want and make one voice heard to effect change. If you’re interested, then head over to find out more and sign up!
