IWD: 8 hairdressing heroines

Happy International Women’s day! Let’s be honest, every day is women’s day really, but today we celebrate and acknowledge women and come together for gender equality. The power of a woman is not to be underestimated and whilst the women’s rights movement has come an exceptionally long way since the first IWD in 1909, there are still things yet to achieve – whilst we are powerful, we can still be vulnerable.

We are celebrating IWD with some real hairdressing heroines. The ones we see pushing boundaries and inspiring others within the industry. Without further ado, let’s introduce them…

Penny Etheridge

Penny Etheridge

With 40 years in the industry we’re pretty sure Penny has ‘been there, done that.’ That’s why we know we can trust Penny when it comes to helping a business succeed. We’ve seen Penny grow from a single-salon to a four-salon group and progress to a business coach. Penny’s clients (particularly the female ones) say her strength and determination is inspiring – and we agree! Following on from the Covid pandemic and the forced closure of salons, Penny had to restructure the way she worked. Today she offers a strong, efficient and attractive online service to run concurrently with  face-to-face work practice. Seeing Penny adapt her own business to ‘modern-day working’ we trust that we’ll be seeing her knowledge and skills help many more salons pull through the other side of the pandemic.

Jo Irving

Hair educator, salon owner, life & business coach in the hair industry – a true hairdressing hero, Jo finds time to do it all. Following the success of her first sell out hair course in Ibiza back in 2018, Jo runs regular yoga retreats specifically designed for hair stylists in a luxurious villa. After two years of travel restrictions, we are delighted to hear Jo is heading back to the white isle this summer – as these retreats needed more than ever right now! The trip includes: yoga each morning, self development & business workshops each day, a private chef, a day trip to formentera, paddle boarding and plenty of pool time. The week is particularly special for the shared moments of creativity, vulnerability and joy that leave guests feeling empowered & remembering who they really are when they are not a stylist, mum, daughter, wife or friend.
