Hair hydration with Joana Neves

With summer arriving, we’re seeing temperatures rising. And with that, it’s no surprise that keeping hair looking and feeling fantastic is at the top of every stylists agenda right now. We’ve caught up with Joana Neves, Editorial Director of Alterna Europe to talk summer hair hydration.

During the warmer months the hair is open to more elements of nature – extreme heat, humidity and sea salt as well as lack of moisture, dehydration, colour fade and a feeling of lack lustre. Summer is a time of enjoyment, a chance to relax and embrace the sunshine and it is vital that the hair is treated as importantly as the skin.

Joana explains, “Moisture is the foundation of healthy hair and helps our hair to be enriched with shine and hydration.  Without hydration the hair can start to lack lustre and become dry, frizzy and lifeless and as hairdressers, we are aware that using the correct products to give the hair the hydration it needs, is essential.”

She continues, “If the hair lacks moisture and is dehydrated, it can result in the hair becoming brittle and weak and therefore more vulnerable to damage, therefore, clients should always be made aware of how they can avoid this at the salon and at home.  Visiting the salon every few months for hair treatments is a great way for clients to give their hair a more intense treatment and further hydration, however, clients should also ensure they’re using the correct products at home. The hair regime in this instance becomes vital and it is our job as professionals to work with our clients to create a bespoke step by step plan to bring their hair back to life and remain as healthy as possible during the warmer months.”

Having a professional home care routine will only enhance and revitalise the hair, giving it a new lease of life whilst protecting against future damage or harsh elements. Joana highlights her top products which are a must in the summer months,  “My top three hair products for giving the hair deep hydration are the Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo, Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner and Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream.   Using all three of these products will give the hair a surge of moisture and will ensure it looks and feels as healthy as possible, whilst also keeping it vibrant in colour and free from frizz.”

She continues, “The CC Cream is an incredible multi-use product and can not only be used on damp hair prior to heated styling, but also on dry hair too, helping to give the hair an added dose of moisture and a further smooth, silky and sleek finish upon achieving the finished hair look. In the summer time in particular our hair can be more prone to becoming dry, dull and damaged, due to the sun absorbing moisture from our hair. Therefore, like we would apply SPF to our skin to protect against damaging UV rays and then follow up with after sun to replenish lost moisture in the skin, clients should have a similar approach with their hair.  On dry hair before going out into the sun, or after being in the sea or swimming pool, clients can apply the Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream into their hair. The leave-in treatment will not only give their hair added strength and keep it looking beautiful, flawless and healthy, but it will also provide UV colour protection. “

“This product can also be layered with other styling products.  I love to recommend that clients step away from heated styling tools and instead, experiment with hairstyles using products that will give their hair added hydration throughout the summer season.  Mixing the CC Cream with a serum or gel and applying into the hair to create the on trend ‘wet look’ or before styling into a sleek topknot bun is a great way for clients to achieve an on trend look for the season whilst caring for their hair at the same time.“
