Going Copper with Mel Brough

Mel Brough, Senior Stylist at Hx and Colour Genius Award finalist talks us through one of her favourite looks on trend copper for this season.

“For 2022, it’s all about the warm tones, especially as we start to reach the end of Summer with Autumn just around the corner. Copper has been such a huge trend this year, inspired by celebrities such as Kendal Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa, we’ve even seen Sydney Sweeney swap her signature blonde locks in favour of copper, it’s a huge trend and definitely one of my favourite colours to work with. It’s a great colour for everyone, as there’s a shade of copper to compliment almost every skin tone. ”

“This look was inspired by the copper trend with high contrast spiced copper tones, copper hair is becoming hugely popular in the salon from bright orange coppers, rose golds and pinks to red coppers it’s definitely a trend to watch. It’s a versatile trend which makes it fun to play with and create bespoke shades for clients. My client had quite a warm skin tone and wanted something that would feel as vibrant as possible whilst evening out her at home colour job as much as possible. She wanted a colour that would last and have room for fade so we went for a deep tone with a high contrast. ”

The Process

  1. I needed to deepen her root, so that we had more of an even base with a slight shadow at the root and keep the ends as bright as possible. We started with a bleach cleanse with lightener and 6% mixed with Brazillian Bond Builder to protect the integrity of the clients hair. As a colourist maintaining the integrity of the clients hair is key to a great end result, when it comes to copper shades we want to create something with luxurious shine. My client had darker areas so the first step was to even out the base to give us a clean base to work with. Brazillian Bond Builder is something that I use on all of my clients, it helps to prevent damage during colour services, protecting against loss of cuticle and cortex cells and reduces breakage. It also improves pigment retention, providing long lasting results.
  2. The next step was to wash and dry the hair to see what base we were working with and then choose colours which best complimented this and to give us the end result that we want. I chose Pravana in 5.4 with 6.0 on the root and 7.43 and 8.44 on the ends to keep them bright.
  3. I left the colour to develop and then rinsed and followed with a colour depositing copper mask, this helps to maintain the longevity of the hair colour and will make the clients colour last longer in between salon appointments.
