Earth Day 2025: Why make sustainability a core factor of business?

As we celebrate Earth Day 2025, it’s a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the businesses that are making a positive impact on our planet. In the hair and beauty world sustainability is no longer just a buzzword, but a crucial aspect of many salon owners’ business plans. From eco-friendly products to energy-efficient equipment, salons are finding innovative ways to reduce their environmental footprint while still providing top-notch services for clients. We’ve spoken to salon owners who are passionate about sustainability and are making it a core part of their business. Let’s dive in…

Earth Day 2025

Billy Ryan

Billy Ryan, Tribe Salons

Sustainability is at the core of the way we run our business and. the decisions we make. Having a sustainable mindset makes us more profitable in the long run. By lowering energy consumption, partnering with suppliers who share our values, and minimising our waste, we reduce overheads and attract clients who appreciate ethical business practices. As a salon and as an industry we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact. The most sustainable choice isnโ€™t always clear, for example, choosing between single-use biodegradable towels and reusable cotton towels requires balancing environmental impact, practicality and cost, to determine what works best for the business.

Brian Leo McCallum

Brian Leo McCallum, ROAR Hair & Beauty

Sustainability is a core value at ROAR Hair & Beauty. We are dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for our clients while minimising our impact on the environment. Our eco-conscious practices naturally extend from this commitment. We have implemented various initiatives, such as Eco Heads to reduce water usage, environmentally friendly dry towels, and serving refreshments in reusable crockery. We partner with brands like KAO, which create products made from clean, natural ingredients and offer refill services to minimise waste.

As sustainability becomes increasingly important to our clients, we are proud to meet their expectations through our ongoing efforts to make a positive impact. We continuously explore new ways to improve, both in our services and in our training programs, ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of our work.

Bridie Thorne

Bridie Thorne, Bridie Thorne Hairdressing

Sustainability is at the heart of everything I do, both personally and in my business. As a hair salon based in the heart of the Forest of Dean, it’s important to me that our work benefits not just our clients, but also our community and the environment. Weโ€™re committed to making responsible choices – recycling everything we can and constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact. By promoting sustainability and working with brands such as evo allows us to use clean, performance-based haircare products that share the same ethos we are able to create the best hair results, while still being conscious of our footprint, and collaboratively passing this way of thinking to customers through retailing their honest products, and responsible packaging.

Chris Grimley

Chris Grimley, Fusion Hair Co.

Partnering with Green Salon Collective has completely transformed how we deal with salon waste. We now add a ยฃ1 green fee to each client bill, which funds the recycling boxes and collection service and thanks to that, weโ€™re recycling up to 90% of our waste. Additionally, as Green Libertine, Iโ€™m proud to be at the forefront of this movement, helping other salons reduce their impact and make sustainability a standard, not a luxury.

Safy Burton

Safy Burton, Safy B’s Hair Salon

At Safy Bโ€™s, being sustainable isnโ€™t just a trend, itโ€™s something we genuinely care about. As a salon, we know the beauty industry can have a big environmental impact, so weโ€™re really mindful of the choices we make, from the products we use to how we manage waste. Weโ€™ve built sustainability into our day-to-day, whether thatโ€™s through our recycling system and working with eco-conscious brands. For us, itโ€™s about doing our bit for the planet while still delivering gorgeous hair. It matters to our team, our clients, and our future.
