We’re officially in spring, bringing us much-needed lighter, brighter days (hoorah!). But for days when light is muted and dull, Dean Lawton-Taylor from Alchemy & I in Berkhamsted, Hampshire , says investing in the right lighting is essential. “If you know you have a client who wants a change, a new client who you’ve not worked on before or will be changing the tone, take advantage of the natural light.

“When you’re colouring under artificial light, always invest in LED lights which are the most accurate light for colour matching. Make sure it is neutral to cool white which is best for hair colour, intermixed with warmer lights for a softer ambience.”

Dean’s top tips for working on colour on dull spring days
- When colouring blondes add some more depth/warmth into the hair. On ash clients add some warm tone into the gloss to add the dept.
- Alternatively, drop one or two levels, keeping it feeling cool and ashy, but more tonal and deeper.
- Show your client their hair colour under a ring light – everyone’s homes have different lighting, but this can help them see how it will look under different lights so they won’t be disappointed with the colour when they see it in their bathroom or bedroom light.
