Newly qualified stylist, D’Arcy White, at Jack & The Wolfe, shares the steps to create her finalist look at the Global Creative Awards: Dark Horse. D’Arcy is a finalist in the New Talent Colourist of the Year category.
Dark Horse’ is a creative look where D’Arcy cleverly plays with colour to create an illusory look that is certainly hard to miss. Say goodbye to oh-natural, this is a look for your more daring clients who love to stand out.
How to recreate ‘Dark Horse’ with D’Arcy White
Step 1: On a pre-lightened model to a level 10, map out your sectioning to begin the creative process. Part hair in the middle all the way to the back of the head and from ear to ear into four sections. This is what we call our hot cross bun sectioning pattern. Underneath the occipital bone this is going to be our “Graphic Section”
Step 2: Paint the root shadow on using formula 1 to our “graphic section” first.
Begin the pattern, painting colour onto the hair using formulas 5,6,7,8. Carefully take fine sections and Goldwell’s Therma foils and Structure Equaliser Spray to help us work in a clean and neat application.
Step 3: Continue to paint the root shadow (formula one) in the rest of the hair.
Step 4: In slices under the temple and in the fringe area, take medium sized sections and paint using formulas 7,6,2.
Step 5: Using the remaining hair and applying formulas 1,2,3,4, use alternating colours to create an ombré effect in the hair.
Step 6: Once the colour has been on for the correct development time, use a cooler water temperature to prevent any bleeds on the hair from happening. Shampoo and Condition as normal.
Step 7: Use KMS Therma Shape Quick Blowdry Spray and a tiny amount of Oribe Supershine Light Moisturising Cream on the mid lengths and ends. Begin to blowdry the hair to activate the product and see the colours come to life. Use a Denman D3 Original Styler and a large round brush ( I prefer the Olivia Garden Extra Long Round Brush) to smooth and create slight volume in the hair.
Step 8: Use Straighteners to create a beautiful bend in the hair and to finish with the KMS Hair Stay Anti Humidity Spray to create a beautiful shine.
