Curl talk

Curl talk
Hair by Matt Surplice

Well I for one (Respect editor Lauren here) am living the actual dream right now with all this curl talk going on in the industry – seriously seems to be the buzz word. So, as a girl who always struggled to accept what-her-momma-gave-her when it came to hair and embrace her curls, it’s amazing to see that working with your natural waves and texture is very much in vogue. It also means so much more fun for you as hairdressers. And with this of course comes a plethora of products (Ouidad, you are my saviours) and hair tools – I mean, have you tried the new Oracle from ghd? If not, why not? and better still, events celebrating curls and educating you and your clients on how to make the most of them.

Everyday curls

Recently our girl Katrine attended an event run by Schwarzkopf Professional’s #SKPCollective member Matt Surplice. As the owner of Spring Hair, the UKs first dedicated curly hair salon, based in Birmingham, Matt is on a mission to educate the hair industry on curls, waves and natural textured hair. “As an industry we’re making curls niche because there’s not enough understanding or education around it. I want to change that.” The event also celebrated the launch of Schwarzkopf Professional Mad About Superfood – a super-moisturising masque, perfect for curls.

Matt, who trained at New York’s famous curl salon Devachan, has recently trademarked Curl by Curl technique and cutting workshops and has clients coming from as far as Europe and Dubai to get their hair done. Spring doesn’t have a Saturday appointment until February 2020 – if that doesn’t tell you what big news curls are we don’t know.

In other curly-hair news, HairFlair Pro has just revealed its rebrand and the launch of Waveformers (Curlformers only looser) at a star-studded moon and stars pampering event. Held at a suite at London’s Mayfair Hotel, journalists and influences were given demos of the easy-to-use Curlformers and Waveformers tools, which work to create heat-free, damage-free curls and waves that last. The event also showcased the brands new limited edition HairFlair Moon and Stars Softhood – a game changer for speedy setting. And once their hair was done, guests could nibble on brownies, get their nails or lashes down or even have their tarot cards read. What a delightful morning for us curly girls.

The next generation of curls

The next generation of curls

Perfect for convincing your next generation of clients to love their curls and celebrate their individual texture, Curly Kids Rock is a book that has just launched, which is full of positive affirmations for girls with curls – why didn’t we think to write this first?

The book promotes self acceptance in a world where we are bombarded with straight glossy haired princesses, and made to believe there is only one type of beauty. Author Lemoy Majen explains: “Every girl needs to understand that she is absolutely perfect, just the way she is. I spent many years trying to conform but, after having three children who all inherited my curly hair, I decided it was time to start creating a world they can succeed, prosper and thrive in. It all starts with my book, which is also personalised, allowing the child to complete their name in the blank spaces throughout, whilst saying the positive affirmations.”
