Craig Henderson wins the Community Champion 2023 award!

Respect to barbershop owner Craig Henderson who wins the Community Champion 2023 award! The title is part of the Greater Manchester Health and Care Champion Awards, and Craig won for his work cutting the hair of children and young adults with additional needs. Craig is owner of Craig’s Barber Shop in Bolton, and as well as his work in the shop, he visits local schools to help children with special needs (SEN). The mission is to help them desensitise to the experience of having their hair cut which might be a traumatic or triggering prospect. We’re happy to see Craig made it into his local paper, The Bolton News, receiving well-deserved recognition for his incredible work. And now we’re calling for the wider hair industry to applaud him.

Craig Henderson’s work

Craig says: “I won the Community Champion award for all the work I do with going into specialist divisions schools. I help children and young adults with additional needs, by helping them get desensitized to the experience in a safe and controlled place, eventually help them fit into “normal” barber or hairdressing setting.”

The awards were hosted by Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership this July. Craig deserves every congratulations, and we are so pleased to see recognition for such an important initiative.

Craig says: “I feel overwhelmed, as I am probably one of the only hairdressers or barbers to have won it relating to an award from the NHS. It is nice that the work I am doing at Firwood School, who nominated me, and other schools, is being recognised. I help kids desensitise to getting a haircut and the schools I work with are for children with additional needs such as autism. I work with a broad spectrum of children with different needs. I help them desensitize to getting a haircut as I understand the process of getting a haircut and the need for cutting in a safe and controlled place.”
