Many hairdressers wear invisible crowns and capes. Glasgow-based salon owner Grant Carr is one of them. Owner of Garçon salon in the city, and an accomplished educator, for the second year running Grant hosted a ‘Back to School cuts’ in his community.
Helping families start the new school year with a smile, kids and their parents were invited to the Columkille Church Parish Hall which was transformed be a salon for the day. Here’s how a day for giving and sharing unfolded.
Sharing and caring
Grant’s intention is to ease the financial burden on families, so he and his team worked alongside the Cambuslang and Rutherglen Family Support Hub. As well as haircuts, there were donations of school uniforms, stationery and food staples for the families. Add to this how fellow local businesses Scran and Roadie delivered pizza and drinks to sustain workers and visitors, plus the team from Super Park kept the waiting kids entertained. The vibe was uplifting, and the mood fun.
Grant tells us that for 2026 it was about making a bigger impact in the community and making sure more kids had access to the basics of a haircut before term starts. Restyling more than 80 kids is quite an achievement and we can high-five Grant Carr, Ray Murdoch, Carmen Innes, Dean Lamb and Sofia Karnejenko. Plus a key influence on Grant, his former teacher and mentor, Mags Nolan.
“You realise the impact this has for parents who are struggling financially at this time. The cost of sending your kids back to school is getting ridiculous; everything really starts to add up. Bringing the kids into our city centre salon would be too much too, so we take it to them. Giving back is great, but it’s really about making the kids feel confident and ready for that first day of school and a great haircut can go a long way towards this.” – Grant Carr.
One lady commented she was “overwhelmed with happiness” at the unexpected generosity of the community. She had four girls to get ready for school, and having a haircut was not a priority. Then, coming away with uniforms and having the kids fed that day had been a huge relief for her. The support team were also on hand to talk to families and offer additional ongoing support.
