Anne Veck finalises for salon design award

Anne VeckWe’ve just heard that Anne Veck Salon in Bicester is in the running to win ‘Salon Design’ of the year in the National Hairdressers Federation 2019 Business Awards. The salon has finalised thanks to its use of recycled and reconstituted materials and furniture to reduce its carbon footprint.

Anne designed the salon and built it herself along with help from two brothers Eric and Sylvain who came over from France, husband Keith and nephew Phil – it really was a family affair. The inspiration for the project came after a trip to Namibia, where Anne and Keith stumbled across a stunning salon, Ilana’s Hair Gallery, in Swakopmund. Its interior design was full of recycled, reconstituted materials, furniture and iron work, rescued from demolition sites or bought at auction or second-hand shops.

Upcycling

Anne decided on upcycling furniture into the salon’s new look rather than buying everything new. She incorporated recycled pallets for the reception area table, the statement welcome desk, selfie-wall and storage throughout the salon, and also sourced and reconstituted a large cable drum as a focal point in the salon. “It’s a great communal hub,” Anne explains. “We stripped and varnished the natural wood, adding plug sockets so clients can charge their phones, and now it’s in the centre of the salon where people can sit whilst their colour develops. We’re so pleased with how we’ve given lots of old items new life.”

Anne adds: “We aimed for a warehouse effect with a feeling of space and light, and the result is current and modern. Being environmentally friendly is so important to us. We truly believe the hairdressing industry could lead the way in sustainability for business in the UK, so we’re proud to play our part in helping the environment and working towards making a positive difference.”

Anne VeckThere’s more…

Also contributing to the business’ sustainability are infrared heaters made from recycled materials that consume 60 percent less energy than standard convection heaters and produce no CO2. In addition, the salon uses compostable towels which reduce hot water use and avoid landfill, has energy efficient LED lighting throughout and uses recycled card and paper for all stationery and literature, while the telephone calls and broadband are 100 percent carbon neutral.

The winner of each category in the NHF/NBF’s Business Awards will be announced at a glitzy awards evening at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, on 17 November 2019.
