Described as Agatha Christie meets Pedro Almodovar, by the Guardian (who gave it 3/5 stars), the new Medusa Deluxe film is a murder mystery set in hairdressing. Someone is killed, and scalped, backstage at a hairdressing awards – which of his competitors could have done it? A tense yet witty film from Thomas Hardiman (his debut) was inspired by listening to the chat at his mother’s salon. There are some really funny lines in this so lean into the comedy, dark as it may be, and enjoy.

The project was sponsored by Diva Pro who hosted a private viewing in London recently, attended by Respect for Hair, and we can pronounce it certainly worth seeing! Granted, this ain’t no promo for hairdressing as a career – the characters are all a bit gritty to reflect the true mood at hair shows – but as a piece of fiction it’s fun. And importantly, it’s a masterclass in avant-garde hair! None other than Eugene Souleiman was advisor for the strong looks on the competition models and adds authenticity.
Medusa Deluxe is released on 9 June in UK and Irish cinemas, and on 4 August on Mubi.
