In the spotlight: Craig’s Barbershop

We couldn’t help but shout about Craig’s Barbershop once we heard what they’ve been doing…

Craig Henderson proudly runs a gender-neutral, neurodiverse barbershop in Bolton alongside his partner, Sarah Jane Timmins. Throughout his career, Craig’s been working with children and young adults with additional needs. Since opening his barbershop Craig has been able to take his project further.

A lot of children struggle when it comes to a haircut, but when it comes to children with additional needs it can become a daunting experience for everyone involved, the child, parents and the professional. Craig works with the child by adjusting to their needs to make having a haircut a much more pleasant experience; whether this is not wearing a cape or laying on the floor because they don’t want to sit on the chair. Craig has also developed some hair industry PEC cards to help children communicate and avoid their parent or guardian pinning them down against their will.

That’s not all… Craig will visit children in nurseries and schools for their haircut, you’d be surprised how smoother the haircut can be in a familiar setting for the child.

“My son Ashton who has SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) has helped me understand how to work with these incredible children. I go into schools and nurseries every month (on my days off) to work with children and young adults with a broad spectrum of additional needs,” says Craig.

“When I manage a full haircut on a child with a fear of everything hairdressing related, it becomes a pleasant experience for the parents too.”

Kudos to Craig for his incredible work!
