Safy B talks non-professional shampoo

We’ve caught up with Safy B to talk about non-professional shampoos and why professional shampoos are better when it comes to safeguarding hair health, condition and colour.

Safy says…

What’s wrong with non-professional shampoo? If I’m being perfectly honest…nothing. You can’t deny it doesn’t do the job, it does what it says on the label – it cleans the hair. But imagine this: you’re stuck between two washing up liquids in the supermarket. You have one very basic supermarket one and the other is the finest Fairy Liquid. At the end of the day, both are washing-up liquids that complete the same task, but have very different ingredients.

But why is this? The price point of a basic washing-up liquid means that they can’t include quality ingredients.

When it comes to salon-standard products, they include the TLC that your hair needs – often being specifically targeted towards a certain hair issue. If you’re going to invest in your haircare and spend that extra 5 – 10% on good quality products – you can rest assured that you’re giving your hair the best chance to be absolutely fabulous.

The majority of non-professional shampoos and conditioners often contain waxes, synthetic silicones, and silica. The main reason for this is to coat your hair, making it ‘feel’ nice, but this leaves a residue. These synthetic silicones are derived from polymers, which are soft, plastic, gel-like substances that are hard to remove from your hair and scalp – this is what causes product build up.

Colourists spend much time perfecting their client’s colour, for their clients to not follow the proper aftercare procedure – and they wonder why their colour isn’t lasting! The client has just as much responsibility as the colourist when it comes to maintaining the colour. We can’t guarantee your colour will last for the recommend amount of time, if you’re not using the combination of shampoo, conditioner, and maintenance aren’t followed as instructed by their stylist.

For my clients who are wanting to maintain their colour in-between visits, I would recommend Goldwell Dualsenses Colour Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s FadeStop formula effectively enhances colour vibrancy and protects against fading, making it an excellent choice for keeping your hair looking fresh and vibrant.

Whilst non-professional shampoos do the job, the quality of the ingredients will weaken the structure of your hair over time – don’t get stuck with dull, dried, damaged hair. Think of professional products as love in a bottle! Your hair will thank you!
