Sean Hanna: 5 tips for upselling

It’s easy to assume a client has a limited budget, but for many clients, they are waiting for you to suggest new services that will enhance their hair and their salon experience and are willing to pay for this. Salon owner and founder of the Sean Hanna Business Consultancy, Sean Hanna, offers his top tips for upselling.

1. Catch their attention

Don’t leave your clients in any doubt that you offer additional services that can enhance their appointments and lead to healthier and more beautiful hair. You should be catching their attention from the moment they enter the salon with visual prompts. Simple pop-up cards, mirror clings, and salon posters make it easy for them to ask questions about the extra services you offer.

2. Inspire with new ideas

It’s the stylist’s job to inspire the client with new and fresh ideas. A client walks in for a cut but sees lots of material relating to L’Oreal Professionnel’s French Balayage or TeasyLights – this will start the conversation and gives the stylist the opportunity to explain the benefits to the client.

3. Elevate the guest experience

Offering clients regular inspiration and new options ensures they feel valued and motivated. This not only improves their overall salon experience but also helps build a strong client/stylist relationship. Clients want to feel that their salon is offering new and interesting options. If they feel your salon isn’t offering them something new and exciting every time they visit, they will go elsewhere for a more inspiring experience.

4. Back up with social content

Your online presence should reflect the in-salon experience. Regularly update your social media platforms and website with content that highlights your add-on services. If clients are happy to be featured on your social channels take before and after shots, or short videos that show the transformation a service can bring. This not only keeps your current clients informed but also attracts potential new clients.

5. Keep the team informed

It’s important to ensure that any new services are supported by team training and communication. Communication with both your team and clients is key to success.
