The Fellowship for British Hairdressing is celebrating a remarkable milestone as Fellowship patron and industry icon, Ann Herman, turns 100.
What a journey
Born in Perth, Scotland, on 28 June 1926, Ann’s career has spanned generations and helped shape the Fellowship into the organisation it is today. Her passion for hairdressing, unwavering standards and commitment to nurturing talent have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire professionals across the industry.
Ann’s hairdressing journey began when she left school, although it was temporarily paused during the Second World War when she joined the Royal Naval Nursing Service. Between 1943 and 1948, she served both in the UK and Sri Lanka before returning to her first love: hairdressing.
After the war, Ann worked in salons across London before purchasing her own salon in North West London. It wasn’t long before her dedication and expertise caught the attention of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, then known as the Fellowship of Hair Artists of Great Britain.
Over more than four decades with the Fellowship, Ann became one of its defining figures. She held a number of key positions, including Vice President, Deputy Chairman, Chief Show Coordinator and Events Director, playing a central role in developing the organisation and raising the standard of its live events. Her contribution was recognised with another first, becoming the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Fellow with Distinction honour.
Known for her honesty and uncompromising standards, Ann earned a reputation as one of the industry’s toughest stage critics. Whether offering feedback to emerging artists or some of hairdressing’s biggest names, she always encouraged performers to refine their craft and deliver their very best. Those high expectations helped elevate countless presentations and inspired generations of educators and artists.
Today, her influence continues through the Ann Herman Scholarship, created by the Fellowship to help hairdressers master the art of stage work. Designed to build confidence and presentation skills, the scholarship supports professionals as they develop the ability to captivate audiences of any size.
Birthday wishes

Her passion, dedication and unwavering commitment have helped shape the organisation we are today. On behalf of the Fellowship, I would like to thank Ann for everything she has given to our industry and wish her a very happy 100th birthday.”
Fellowship President Simon Shaw added:
“Ann Herman is quite simply a Fellowship icon. Throughout her remarkable career, she has inspired countless hairdressers, encouraged creative excellence, and helped so many individuals realise their potential. Her influence can be seen across generations of professionals who have benefitted from her guidance, honesty, and passion for our craft. Ann’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Fellowship, and it is a privilege to celebrate this incredible milestone with her. Happy 100th birthday, Ann.”
Everyone at Respect joins the industry in celebrating Ann Herman’s extraordinary contribution to British hairdressing. Reaching 100 is an incredible achievement in itself, but leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire the next generation is something truly special. Happy birthday, Ann.
