Grant Carr: Free Back-to-School haircuts

With the cost of getting the kids ready for a new school term climbing every year, one Glasgow salon owner decided to do something about it. Grant Carr, owner of a local salon and a dad himself, offered free haircuts to children in his community, helping parents ease the financial strain and ensuring children start the school year feeling confident.

Rather than hosting the event in his salon, Grant brought the initiative right into the heart of the community. Earlier this week St Columbkille’s Hall in Rutherglen was transformed into a pop-up salon. The location made it easier for families to access, and the turnout was proof it worked—over 50 children came along for a fresh new look.

“It’s a small way that I can give back and make sure that every child starts the new school year feeling confident and ready,” Grant shared.

Grant was joined by a talented team of fellow stylists: Carmen Innes, Craig Barr, and his own teacher and mentor, Mags Nolan. Together, they offered cuts for all hair types and lengths, ensuring boys and girls alike walked away happy and school-ready.

The day wasn’t just about haircuts, it was about community, kindness, and showing that a simple gesture can make a big difference. As the kids compared their new styles and parents exchanged thanks, the sense of connection was clear.

In a time when back-to-school costs can feel overwhelming, Grant and his team proved that generosity and skill go hand-in-hand—and that sometimes, the best way to start the school year is with a fresh cut and a big smile.
