5 tips for nailing your colour consultation

Charlotte Oโ€™Flanagan, founder of Charlotte Paints Hair, understands that every great colour result begins long before the first brushstroke. It starts with the consultation. With a reputation for staying ahead of trends, Charlotte believes communication, trust, and connection are at the heart of every successful client relationship.

Here, she shares her top tips for the perfect colour consultation. Practical, proven ways to understand your clientโ€™s vision, manage expectations, and create results that truly delight.

Tips for the Perfect Colour Consultation

A flawless consultation is the foundation of client satisfaction. Hereโ€™s how we nail it every time:

1. Ask for Visuals
Encourage clients to bring photos of what they love (and what they donโ€™t). Sometimes a client will ask for โ€œbalayageโ€ but really mean highlights, the photos clear up any confusion.

2. Show Your Own Work
Use examples of your salonโ€™s work to fine-tune what the client wants. This ensures the result matches their expectations and your expertise.

3. Make it Personal
Sit down with clients during consultations. It feels more intimate and relaxed, helping them feel at ease.

4. Offer Free Consultations
Clients are more willing to discuss options openly when thereโ€™s no pressure. We encourage them to take as much time as they need.

5. Avoid Hard Selling
Never pressure a client to book on the spot. Provide them with multiple options and let them go away and decide. Empowering clients builds trust.
