We love when a collection is made up of wearable looks. Shout out to Pauline McCable for making this happening within the Muse collection.
Inspiration
When it comes to translating intellectual concepts into a photograph, I begin by curating visual references. With a background in fine art, my creative thoughts are always drawn out in one of my sketchbooks. I sketch out each hair look and the steps that I will take to create it. Products, tools, pieces and any colouring that I will do all combine to create a final, polished look.
I believe that image making is a space where we come to have focused play together. Each creative brings their own ideas and energy to the space. Words as well as images are equally part of the process of bringing the vision to life and I make sure I am expressing my concepts through the power of purposeful vocabulary.
This time, we took our cues from the Tom Ford 2024 Hair Campaign. As Peter Hawkings took over at the creative helm, it heralded a new gaze on the codes upon which the house was founded. I loved the way this new perspective was brought to life and wanted to emulate some of its references.
I was also inspired by iconic fashion images epitomised by Helmut Newton and YSL. There’s a fusion of 70s and 90s glamour with a slight punk edge in my collection. The lighting had a blue-ish, cool tone, while makeup reflected back to the iconic YSL and Helmet Newton images – sensual and unapologetically feminine.
I wanted to create cool, relevant and accessible images. This would be a hair campaign that represented our brand- commercial with an edge, editorial images of hair that our clients would love to wear.
I used my favourite house models and muses who represent our brand, giving them cool haircuts with a slightly punk edge, using classic cutting techniques and infusing them a twist by adding colour and choppy length, as well as block colouring on technical bobs. My aim was toshow diversity of texture and styling techniques.
A mind map, coupled with my words and sketches allow the team to really see the hair shapes, colours and concepts evolve. Preparation is crucial and so I work on head blocks before the shoot, to create the looks and work out everything before the day. I find that when you have a clear objective it allows your creativity to shine on the day.
At Rock Paper Scissors, our brand pillars revolve around being fashion focused plus celebrating inclusivity, diversity and individuality. This collection is an expression of everything the brand stands for.
