Contrast is a collection by Rory Mason, owner and director of Rory Antonio Hair & Beauty Lab, inspired by contrasting textures and vivid, clashing colours. Rory brings together colours that aren’t considered as obviously complementary. In doing so, he creates a bold look with an element of softness and a raw edge. Contrast is undoubtedly hard-to-miss. Let this inspire you to create something fierce in the salon.
Inspiration behind Contrast
Rory Mason says: “We wanted to use a colour that we had rarely used on a model or in a collection before. However, we needed to ensure an opposing colour complemented the green and prevented it from taking over. The “checker-board” technique is simple, but these blocks of colour were broken up and texturised throughout the mullet cut. Random areas of hair are removed by blunt-cutting with scissors and slicing with a blade.
We needed a more block-bold colour to work with all the different textures and movements the cut gave us when applying wind when shooting. The undercut on the side absorbs some of the light in front of the camera. This is why we used more yellow tones on the softer, longer areas of hair, creating lighter contrast and brighter focal points.”
